VINTAGE PIE BIRD designed by Clarice Cliff

WONDERFUL and collectible vintage pottery black bird with open yellow beak pie bird, designed by Clarice Cliff. Placed in the center of the pie, the bird has a hole in the beak to allow steam to vent from pies.

Also known as a crust support or steam vent to allow hot steam to be released while a pie is cooking to avoid the filling seeping out under pressure. These pie birds were very popular and a 'must have' in a good kitchen.

The charming handpainted funnel is in very nice condition, a bit of light crazing to the glaze as is common displays beautifully.

Embossed on the front of the base is the registered design number 809138 dating the design to 1936-37.
The pie bird stands about 4 inches high. A perfect item for the charming farmhouse or French country cottage decor. Makes a lovely gift for a baker! A highly collectible kitchenalia item.

We ship world wide and combine shipping.
